Meet Imbumi & Martha Makuku
The Makukus serve the urban poor in one of the largest slums in Kenya through a church, school, child sponsorship program, girl’s shelter, and HIV/AIDs ministry. Imbumi serves as the pastor of the Kibera Reformed Presbyterian Church and is involved with teaching, preaching, evangelism, discipleship, and diaconate outreach. KRPC is a word and deed ministry.

Since 2002, when HIV and AIDs was rampant, the Mamlaka Foundation has been ministering to the spiritual and physical needs of the most vulnerable of the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya through word and deed ministry.
Imbumi and Martha Makuku, upon returning to Kenya after Imbumi had concluded his Divinity studies in RTS Orlando, felt led to plant a church in Kibera, not knowing that God wanted them there because of the many orphans left behind after their parents succumbed to AIDs. “Our beginning was very difficult!! We buried people every month. The cemetery manager had actually come to know me by name.”
The Makukus have consistently served our Lord and Saviour by having church services that are mostly attended by children. The ministry invests heavily in their education, nutrition, and medical needs. “We believe that the true proclamation of the gospel, accompanied by acts of mercy, reverses cycles of poverty and destructive life patterns.”
Their discipleship programs include: VBS, youth camps, gang outreach, and education to the highest levels the kids can attain so long as they remain connected to the church. Every Saturday the children learn to play musical instruments. The ministry also hosts medical teams for the community. “Some people have been rescued from the jaws of death in the nick of time.”
To supplement their food security, the ministry undertakes agricultural production to help in their school lunch program and support the boys’ and girls’ shelters. They rear poultry and engage in animal husbandry. Their food is grown organically using animal manure.
The church, school, and Shunem shelter enable them to reach the kids in all aspects of their lives. The goal is to help them become well -rounded Christians impacting all areas of life where God will place them. The spiritual, social, physical, and mental needs continue to be their core areas of focus.
All this can only be done in the power of the Holy Spirit. Pray that He will continually fill the Makukus and all their staff who minister to these precious children.
